At The North Star Academy, our mission is to make a meaningful difference by assisting individuals and the families who support them.  We are committed to individuals reaching fulfilled and independent lives through the acquisition and retention of skills in an enriched environment

Outreach and Training

North Star Academy provides support, education and training to parents, family members, caregivers, teachers in the home school district and professional.  We also conduct private consultations within and outside the school’s community.  We host a regular on-line and workshop series at the school and in the evening.  Click here  to view the current schedule or to register.

North Star Academy Outreach Progam Consists of the Following:

Supervision and Consultation

North Star Academy Outreach Supervisors meet regularly with families to devise goals and create individualized curriculum for home and/or school which address the management of behaviors, provide carry-over of skills learned at the school to the home and foster independence both in the home and in community settings. North Star Academy Supervisors regularly attend IEP meetings and help the IEP committee develop appropriate goals and recommendations of services for each learner.

Direct 1:1 ABA Instruction

North Star Academy Outreach Therapists provide direct instruction in the home and shadow learners at school and in the community utilizing the principles of ABA. North Star Academy teaching therapists receive ongoing comprehensive training in the most effective, scientifically-validated educational and treatment options available.

Parent Training

North Star outreach staff provide family training to address challenging behaviors in the home and community settings.

Professional Development and Workshops

North Star Academy Outreach Supervisors provide trainings and conduct workshops serving school districts, schools and other organizations seeking training in ABA techniques and behavioral intervention plans. We also participate in local and national conferences to help disseminate valuable information about treatment options with other organizations that serve individuals with Autism, I/DD and moderate to severe behavior problems.

Distance Consultation

North Star Academy Outreach Supervisors travel to families outside the immediate area served by North Star Academy to provide on-site supervision and training in ABA and to aid in the development and implementation of treatment plans. The frequency of on-site supervision is determined in consultation with the families and is supplemented with frequent phone and behavioral health video consultations.

Psychological Evaluations

North Star Academy Outreach Program provides autism diagnostic evaluations.   Autism Spectrum Disorder is a lifelong complex neurological disorder that impairs a person’s ability to communicate and interact socially.  It is also associated with unusual and/or repetitive behaviors or interests.  The symptoms and severity of symptoms of Autism Spectrum Disorder vary greatly.  Many children are often misdiagnosed or diagnosed later in life when intervention is critical.  Research indicates that early intervention in an appropriate educational setting can result in significant improvements for many young children with Autism Spectrum Disorders.   Parents often have concerns about their child’s development before they are diagnosed and are welcome to call in order to determine whether additional assessment is warranted.  Autism assessments include in-depth parent and teacher (if available) interviews, review of child’s records, psychological testing and assessment, and the administration of the Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule.  In addition to Autism diagnostic evaluations, we also conduct psychological evaluations to children and adolescents who are experiencing behavioral, emotional, and learning problems.  All evaluations consist of an informing conference and written report.  Recommendations are provided along with referrals as needed.
